EFI in Foster City took their first steps toward a green future with their in-house café (managed by Guckenheimer). It was a natural starting point as they already had compostable cups, food containers and utensils in use, so they added the necessary bins and began educating all staff including janitorial staff. Part of the education was done by creating a table with tangible items from our café environment and separating these in Trash, Recycling and Compost categories. This table display was later repurposed as a 3D signage posted above the separation receptacles in the Café dish area. Their efforts of signage and appointing “compost guardians” to circulate during lunch hours between floors, along with email reminders, has helped them achieve an increased diversion from 16.42% to 76.85%
