At the beginning of year 2011, Merry Moppet School’s diversion rate based on volume was at 14.29%. A site visit and a waste audit were conducted by Recology San Mateo County with the assistance from the Director of Finance and Operations of the school. The results showed that the majority of waste was food scraps, paper towels and plant materials. Since the Belmont school has two full kitchens with staff preparing meals from scratch for students daily, and considering the results from the audit, the school quickly decided to start a composting program through BizSMART. By starting a composting program, increasing recycling service and decreasing garbage, Merry Moppet School achieved diversion level of 76.92%.
