One-third of our household waste comes from product packaging. Although some packaging is necessary for health and shelf-life reasons, some manufacturers overpackage products, which result in higher costs for consumers.

Sisters of Mercy are responsible for a retreat center, convent and a nursing care facility in Burlingame. In 2011 they implemented organics collection throughout their campus. They have taken full responsibility to make sure that there is no contamination in their recyclables. They also do their own "backyard" composting with all the greenery throughout campus. Their efforts award them a diversion rate of 61%.
