Construction and Demolition
Construction and demolition (C&D) materials account for a large
portion of the local waste stream. Consequently, recycling that material
is a great benefit to everyone to help each city reach and maintain a
state-mandated 50% diversion goal.
C&D materials can include lumber, paper, cardboard, metals, masonry
(brick, concrete, etc.), carpet, plastic, pipe (plastic, metal, and
clay), drywall, rocks, dirt, and green waste related to land
development.
Regulations
Many communities on the Peninsula have ordinances requiring recycling
of C&D materials. Below is a list of the SBWMA communities that have C&D
ordinances:
For specific construction and demolition ordinances in your city, please see our Ordinances page.
Recycling
In many cases, recycling C&D materials is often more economical than
disposing of the material. To learn more about how you can recycle your
material, visit the RecycleWorks web site.
And, close the loop by using recycled materials in your construction
project. For more on this topic, see the Recycled-Content Product
Directory on Construction products at

Sustainable Building
Recycling C&D materials is one component of a more holistic practice
often called "sustainable" or "green" building. Sustainable buildings
use materials and resources more efficiently. Green building practices
can include salvaging dimensional lumber from structures, using
reclaimed aggregates, or designing the structure in way that requires
less material. Other sustainable building techniques include designing
for more natural light, adding photovoltaic systems to the roof, or
including solar water heating.
