Contract Compliance
A big part of our job is making sure you get the best possible service at the best rates. To do this we regularly monitor the performance of the company providing those services to you through monthly reports. On April 3, the SBWMA will hold the annual Performance Review of Allied Waste. A performance hearing panel consisting of SBWMA board members will focus primarily on the following areas:
- Collection operations, including the quality of service and number of missed pick-ups
- Customer service, including call center performance, service to member agencies, and so on
- Recycling programs including residential and commercial services
- Shoreway Recycling and Disposal Center management, including public recycling programs, scalehouse operations and handling of trash and recyclables.

Performance Hearing, December 2005
On December 13, 2005, the SBWMA staff presented its report on the performance hearing of Allied Waste, focusing on the achievements of services and diversion/waste reduction during the 12 months since the previous hearing by Allied Waste Services (formerly BFI). Allied Waste requested a continuance, and was granted a continuance to provide a written report and to make a presentation to the hearing board. The performance hearing considers Allied Waste's performance under the Operating and Collection Agreements, specifically Contract Compliance, Performance on Diversion Programs, Facility Maintenance, and Operational Performance.
Based on the Performance Hearing review, the hearing panel made several recommendations for improvement. The panel recommended the SBWMA Executive Director consider transferring the management of the scale house and business recycling outreach programs to the SBWMA, and more accurate, in-depth reporting of waste and recycling tonnages.
The SBWMA will work with all of its partners to make these recommendations a reality, improving services for SBWMA customers.

Performance Hearing, November 2004
The SBWMA concluded that Allied Waste/BFI met most of their performance criteria. The notable exception was that the company did not meet its business recycling goals in 2002 and 2003. Other areas identified for improvement were waste reduction programs, customer service and operational cost reductions. The SBWMA continues to work with Allied Waste/BFI to improve programs, and is currently discussing alternatives for extending Allied Waste's contract.
