Transforming the Way We Think about Trash

Save some green with your spring cleaning. And, if you need additional recycling buddies or to refresh posters, please contact me.

Reduce :: Paper or Plastic? Say Neither and BYO

Reusable bags are widely used at farmers' markets, but do you take those same bags to the grocery store? The average shopper consumes 135 shopping bags from the grocery store. So, stop trashing those bags and bring your own bag (BYOB). Start a new habit and BYOB next time you enter any store.

Reuse :: Don't just recycle, Freecycle

The Freecycle is a network of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. By "recycling" (technically "reusing") unwanted items, less will end up in landfill. One person's trash can be another's treasure - the ideal way to save cash and save the planet! To find your nearest group, visit www.freecycle.org.

Simple to use, when you want to find a new home for something - whether it's a chair, a fax machine, or garden irrigation - simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your local Freecycle group. And, if you're looking to acquire something yourself, simply respond to a member's offer, and you just might get it.

Recycle :: Don't Trash those Small Electrics

If you are doing your spring cleaning, and purging your home of broken small electronic gizmos like mobile phones, microwaves, and telephones, be sure to dispose of or recycle them properly. These items contain hazardous chemicals and materials and fall under the Universal Waste Rule in California banning their disposal in the trash.

  • Mobile phone collection points are in many city halls
  • Alkaline battery collections are also in many city halls
  • Rechargeable batteries are collected separately for recycling at many retail stores
  • These and other small electrics can be taken to the Recycling Center (Gate 1) in San Carlos.

Do your part to help the planet: reduce, reuse, and recycle!
