Native Gardening: Let Your Garden Go Native and Let Go of Waste

Native plants are particularly suited to live in dry summer climates found in the Bay Area, and need less water and maintenance than many non-native species.

If you've always wanted a great looking garden without the work, let it go native! Because they've adapted to our local dry summer climate, drought-tolerant natives need little or no summer water once they are established, and usually only need trimming once per year. This means less plant materials for your green bin and less water waste. Although plant materials placed in your green cart are composted and not landfilled, preventing waste is always better than recycling!

The annual Going Native Garden Tour is a great way to see how local residents use native and other low-maintenance plants to create stunning landscapes.
