Recycling Services

The primary goal of the Multi-Family Dwelling Recycling Program is to increase diversion of recyclable materials from landfills. This generally results in decreased garbage collection service fees for the property manager or owner and increased life of local landfills.

In order to accomplish this goal, identification of the target materials is key. Multi-family dwelling residents are eligible to receive a two-pocket, reusable Recycling Tote-Bag that provides a convenient place to store and transport recyclables to the recycling bins. The Recycling Tote-Bags are provided to make recycling more convenient, which in turn hopefully leads to more recycling.

Each Recycling Tote Bag comes with a list of accepted materials. Residents are informed about proper disposal of household hazardous waste, reuse organizations, and composting with a move-in and move-out handout.

Another key to success is to measure the program's effectiveness. Allied’s Recycling Coordinators will provide data prior to implementing the program in order to quantify the success of the program a few months after it is up and running.

Your efforts to recycle pay immediate dividends by conserving trees and water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing airborne pollutants, and limiting our dependence on oil and gas use. Remember, "Nothing is waste until it is wasted."

People Make Recycling a Success

A successful Multi-Family Dwelling Recycling Program requires a cooperative “partnership” between the residents/tenants, the complex or building manager or homeowner association manager, and Allied. Every program needs a recycling advocate who will work with all parties and act as the champion for the cause. If you are a champion or know of one, we’d like to hear about you and assist your efforts. Please send us an email at info@rethinkwaste.org

In most cases, each building needs to be individually evaluated. Although this could be time-consuming, a tailored approach typically leads to better participation and higher recycling rates. Each building has its own personality, from the management to the tenants, and from the building design to the collection locations.

Space constraints and siting of the centralized recycling receptacles are both factors that can impact the success of the program. Some buildings do not want to participate due to the perceived lack of space for recycling. However, Allied’s Recycling Coordinators are available to visit your site to assist with developing a program and advise you on the appropriate location, types, and size of recycling bins.
