Environmental Education Center

Environmental Education Center

Starting in January 2012, RethinkWaste will offer FREE tours and bus transportation for 4th through 6th grade public and private school classes in the RethinkWaste Service Area* to the Shoreway Environmental Center to learn about the 4Rs, resource management, conservation and what happens to recyclables, yard trimmings and food scraps and garbage.

In addition, FREE tours for interested community groups will be offered. However, these groups will have to arrange their transportation to and from the center. Tours will also be provided to schools outside our service area, but in San Mateo County, if open tour times are available, but such schools will not be offered busing assistance.

School Group Tours

Tours of the new state-of-the-art Shoreway Environmental Center offer students and the community an opportunity to learn first-hand what happens to their recyclables, yard trimmings, food scraps and garbage at a working Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Transfer Station. The tour education program is based in a broader foundation of resources conservation and human ecology and provides specific instruction on the 4Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot/composting). The program seeks to engage students and increase their knowledge through active learning experiences. The curriculum goal is to educate kids in resource conservation and 4R behaviors so that they will be empowered to conserve resources in their lives and practice recycling at their schools and residences.

The tour activities are based on the best practices in environmental education and provide connections to the California State Content Standards.
